These recent allegations come after a child abuse scandal that cost the county head start funding, a school volunteer facing 270 sexual child abuse charges and a high school teacher arrested for sexually abusing another student.

The meeting was closed to the public, but school board members did confirm allegations of abuse was the subject of the meeting, one member stressed that changes need to be made.

In less than a year, at least 28 Prince George’s County school students have reported being abused by someone tied to the school district.

On Thursday, most school board members were unwilling to comment after leaving an emergency board meeting.

Board member Edward Burroughs said the school district has fostered a culture of abuse, lacks transparency and is calling for External investigation into the list of alleged wrong doings, including child abuse by head start teachers that sparked a federal investigation.

In February, a school volunteer was arrested and facing 270 sexual child abuse pornography charges.

In May, police arrested a teacher at Forestville High School for sexually abusing a 17 year old student.

On Monday, the schools CEO Kevin Maxwell announced a bus aide is under investigation for allegedly abusing a special needs child last year and a supervisor investigated for failing to report the allegations.

On Tuesday, Maxwell announced the new Principal of Sylvania Woods Elementary, is on leave while allegations of improper conduct are investigated.

Those leadership decisions says school board member Burroughs begin with schools CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell but are not limited to him.

These are the same complaints that many parents we’ve heard from over the last few weeks also have.
